Privacy Policy

Last updated 11 August 2026

Near Library is a study platform that lets students track their reading and tasks, and lets a parent they invite follow their progress. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do with it.

Information we collect

WhatWhenWhy
Email address Sign-up and every sign-in It is your account identifier and how we send you one-time sign-in codes.
Name, profile photo If you sign in with Google Supplied by Google so your account shows your name rather than a raw email.
Phone number Only if you add it to your profile Optional. We do not require it and do not send SMS.
Parent name and email When a student invites a parent To send the invitation and link the two accounts.
One-time sign-in codes Each sign-in attempt To verify it is you. Codes expire quickly and are single-use.
Study data — books, chapters, tasks, priorities, due dates, time tracked, comments As you use the app This is the content of the service; without it there is nothing to show you.
Notification subscription and browser identifier Only if you turn on notifications To deliver push notifications to that specific browser or device.
Location — latitude, longitude and accuracy Only while you have location sharing switched on To show your linked parent or guardian where you are studying.
Location sharing is off unless you turn it on. It applies to student accounts only. When it is on, your device reports its position and your linked parent or guardian can see it; your browser will also ask for location permission, which you can refuse or withdraw at any time. We keep only your 50 most recent positions — older ones are deleted automatically, so there is no long-term movement history. Switching the setting off stops collection immediately.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell or rent your personal information.
  • We do not show advertising, and we do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
  • We do not use your study content to build profiles for anything other than showing it back to you and your linked parent.

Who else sees your data

We share information only with the services needed to run the app:

  • Google — if you choose "Sign in with Google", Google verifies your identity and tells us your email, name and profile photo.
  • Resend — our email provider, which delivers your sign-in codes and invitations. It processes your email address to send that mail.
  • Push services — if you enable notifications, your browser's push service (such as Google or Mozilla) delivers the message to your device.
  • Our hosting provider — which stores the database that runs the service.

We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect the safety of a user.

Parent and student accounts

A parent can only see a student's data after the student invites them by email. A linked parent can view the student's tasks, progress and work sessions, and leave comments. A parent cannot edit or delete the student's tasks, and cannot see anything from before the link was made unless it is part of that same task history. A student can ask us to remove the link at any time using the contact address below.

Children

Near Library is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us at privacy@nearlibrary.com and we will delete the account and its data.

How long we keep it

  • Account and study data — for as long as your account exists.
  • Sign-in codes — minutes; they are expired and unusable after that.
  • Notification subscriptions — until you turn notifications off or the browser invalidates them.
  • Location positions — only the 50 most recent per student; each older one is deleted as a new one arrives.
  • After deletion — removed from the live database promptly, and from routine backups within 30 days.

Deleting your account

Go to Delete your account, enter your email address and confirm the code we send you. Your profile, study data, location history, notification subscriptions and any parent link are deleted immediately. You do not need the app installed to do this.

You can also email privacy@nearlibrary.com from the address on your account to request deletion, a copy of your data, or a correction to anything that is wrong.

Security

The service is served over HTTPS. There are no passwords to steal: sign-in uses a one-time code sent to your email, or Google's own sign-in. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we will tell you in the app or by email.
